If You Share Someone's Instagram Profile, Will They Know?

Sharing someone's Instagram profile in a DM, by link or QR code sends them no alert. The one exception is an @mention on your story. Here's how it works.

You found an account worth passing along: a friend’s small business, a creator you love, or a profile you want a second opinion on. Before you tap that share button, there’s a fair question: will the person whose profile you’re sending find out it was you?

Here’s the short answer: no, Instagram does not notify someone when you share their profile. Sending a profile in a DM, copying the profile link, sharing the QR code, or sending it through another app creates no alert, and Instagram gives the account owner no list of who shared them. The one real exception is your story. If you @mention the person on a story, Instagram tells them about the mention. Below is how each sharing method works, who can see what, and how to keep a share quiet.

Every way to share an Instagram profile

Instagram builds profile sharing around the profile card. Open any profile, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and the card appears with a few options under it. According to Instagram’s Help Center, you can share someone else’s profile card even if you don’t follow them. The options are:

  • Send: shares the profile in an Instagram message (DM) to one person or a group chat.

  • Copy link: copies the profile URL so you can paste it anywhere.

  • Share to…: opens your phone’s share sheet so you can send the profile through another app.

  • Download: saves the card as a profile card video or a QR code image.

  • Add to story: puts the profile card on your Instagram story.

  • Messages: opens a text message on your phone with a link to the card.

The card itself only holds information that is already public on the profile: the username, name, profile picture, bio, links, pronouns, and the QR code. Instagram’s Help Center says anyone can share a card and see that public information. Sharing a profile reveals nothing new about the account owner.

Does Instagram notify the person when you share their profile?

For direct sharing, no. When you send a profile in a DM, the only people who get anything are the people in that chat. The profile owner isn’t in the conversation, so they get no message, no push notification, and no activity alert. The same goes for copying the link, downloading the QR code, or sending the card through text or another app.

Instagram also doesn’t keep a “shared by” list for profiles. There’s no setting, no hidden menu, and no notification type that tells someone “your profile was shared.” If you’ve wondered the same thing about posts, it works the same way. See the guide on whether people know when you share their Instagram post.

There’s also no way to see who opened a profile. Instagram has no “who viewed my profile” feature, so when your friend taps the profile you sent them, the owner can’t see that visit either. No app can show who views your profile, whatever its ads claim.

Sharing a profile to your story: the one exception

Your story is the one place where sharing a profile can be noticed, for two reasons.

First, a story is public to your audience. If you add someone’s profile card to your story, everyone who can see your story can see it, and the profile owner might be one of those viewers. If they follow you, they could simply come across it.

Second, an @mention does notify the person. Instagram’s Help Center says that when someone you follow mentions you in their story, you get a direct message from them with a preview of the story. If you don’t follow the person who mentioned you, the mention lands in your message requests instead. Either way, the mentioned person finds out. So if you type @username on your story, or use the mention sticker, assume the person will know.

Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t say whether adding a profile card to a story counts as a mention. If you want to share a profile on your story without alerting the owner, the safest choice is to skip the story and send the profile privately. Also remember that your story’s viewer list shows you who saw your story, but it doesn’t tell the profile owner anything. What the person you send it to can see

The person who gets the shared profile sees more than the profile owner does. In a DM, two normal chat signals apply:

  • Read receipts: if they’re on, the person in the chat can see when you’ve viewed their messages, and you can see when they’ve viewed yours. Instagram lets you turn read receipts off for one chat or for all chats.

  • Activity status: if it’s on, people you follow and anyone you message can see when you were last active or are currently active.

Both of these are between you and the person you’re messaging. Neither one reaches the profile owner. For a full look at the “Seen” label, see how to tell if someone read your Instagram DM.

Sharing a private account’s profile

You can send a private account’s profile link just like a public one. The recipient will see the profile information that Instagram always shows, such as the profile photo, name, username, and bio. Instagram’s Help Center lists that information as visible to anyone, on or off Instagram, for both public and private accounts. Posts and videos on a private account stay visible to approved followers only. To see them, the recipient has to send a follow request and be accepted, and the owner sees that request. A shared link doesn’t unlock anything, and no website or app can get around that either.

How to share a profile without leaving a trace

If you want to be sure the profile owner never knows, keep the share private:

  1. Send it in a DM or copy the link instead of posting it on your story.

  2. Don’t type an @mention of the person anywhere public, including stories and comments.

  3. Pick your recipients with care. Instagram won’t tell the owner, but the person you send it to could.

If you just want to look at a public profile or its stories without being logged in at all, you can do that anonymously with ViewIGStory. It works with public accounts only, and your Instagram account never touches the profile. If you were wondering about reshared stories instead of profiles, read about whether Instagram tells people when you share their story.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you share someone’s Instagram profile, will they know?

Not from Instagram. Sending a profile in a DM, copying its link, or sharing its QR code sends no notification to the owner, and Instagram keeps no list of who shared a profile. They would only find out if you @mention them on your story or if the person you sent it to tells them.

Can someone see who shared their Instagram profile?

No. Instagram has no feature that shows an account owner who shared their profile or how many times it was shared. Apps that claim to reveal profile sharers or profile visitors are making it up, and some of them try to collect your login.

Does sharing a profile to your story notify the person?

An @mention on your story does. Instagram sends the mentioned person a DM with a preview, or a message request if they don’t follow you. Instagram doesn’t document a notification for a profile card on its own, but the owner may still see it if they can view your story.

Can people see that you shared their profile if their account is private?

No. Private accounts get no alert when their profile is shared, just like public ones. The person you send the link to will see the basic profile information, but they won’t see posts unless the owner approves their follow request.

Is sharing an Instagram profile anonymous?

To the profile owner, yes. To the person you share it with, no: they see it came from you, and DM signals like read receipts and activity status may apply. If you want full anonymity, don’t send it at all. Just look at the public profile yourself.

Bottom line

Sharing someone’s Instagram profile is a quiet action. A DM, a copied link, a QR code, or a share through another app sends no notification to the owner, and Instagram gives them no list of who shared or viewed their profile. The exception is your story: an @mention notifies the person, and anything on your story can be seen by anyone who views it. If you want the share to stay between you and your recipient, send it privately and skip the mention.
