Instagram Story Comments: Who Can See Them (2026)
Who can see and leave Instagram story comments, how long they last, how to turn them off, and why no anonymous story viewer shows them. Checked October 2026.
Instagram story comments can be read by anyone who can see the story, and each one carries the commenter’s username and profile picture. Writing one is narrower: by default, only people the story owner follows (public accounts) or followers the owner follows back (private accounts) can comment, and a comment can be at most 60 characters long.
Most guides get the lifespan wrong. When Instagram launched story comments in September 2024, the feature was reported as “mutuals only, gone after 24 hours.” The Instagram Help Centre pages, as they read on 29 October 2026, say something different: comments stay with the story in the owner’s archive, and they stay visible to everyone if the story is saved to a highlight. This guide follows those current pages.
Who can see comments on an Instagram story
Instagram story comments are visible to everyone who can see the story itself. The Help Centre puts it in one line: “Anyone who can see a story can also see comments on that story.” There is no separate audience setting for reading comments.
That means the reach of a comment depends on the story’s audience:
- Public account, normal story: anyone who opens the story in the Instagram app.
- Private account: the owner’s approved followers. Our guide on who can see your story when your account is private covers that audience in detail.
- Close Friends story: only the people on that list.
- Highlight: anyone who can view the highlight, for as long as it stays on the profile.
Comments show up while the story plays. At launch, Engadget reported that small profile pictures of commenters appear on the story, so other viewers can tell at a glance that a conversation exists.
Who can leave a comment
Instagram limits who can write a comment, and the default depends on the account type. According to the Help Centre page About comments on Instagram stories:
- Public account: by default, anyone the story owner follows can comment.
- Private account: by default, only followers the owner follows back can comment.
The Comment on an Instagram story page adds two details. The story owner can open comments to all followers, or turn them off completely. And a story comment can only be 60 characters, emojis included. That limit is why story comments read like quick reactions, not threads.
You can also comment on your own story, which some creators use to pin context under a photo.
To post a comment, tap the story, tap Comment at the bottom, type, and tap Send. If you don’t see the Comment button, you are not in the allowed audience or the owner has turned comments off.
How long story comments last
Story comments last as long as the story they sit on. For a normal story, that means other viewers stop seeing comments when the story expires after 24 hours. Two exceptions change that, both from the Help Centre:
- The archive. The story owner can still see the comments when they open the expired story in their archive.
- Highlights. If the owner saves the story to a highlight, the comments stay visible to anyone who can view that highlight.
This is the detail that changed since 2024. TechCrunch and Engadget covered the launch on 3 September 2024, and the launch coverage described comments as disappearing after 24 hours with the story. If you comment on a story that later goes into a highlight, assume your comment goes with it.
How to turn off comments on your Instagram story
The Help Centre steps give you three ways to control story comments.
Turn off comments for all stories:
- Tap Add (the + button), then tap Story.
- Tap the Settings icon at the top right.
- Tap Story.
- Under Commenting, tap Allow comments, then tap Off.
Turn off comments for one story before you post it: while editing, tap Options at the top right, then Turn off commenting.
Turn off comments on a story that is already live: open your story, tap Options at the bottom right, then Turn off commenting.
Delete a single comment: open your story, tap Activity at the bottom left, tap Options next to the comment, then Delete comment. Instagram also has a separate flow to report a story comment.
Turning off comments does not turn off private message replies. Message replies have their own setting, and by default anyone who can see your story can reply with a message.
Story comments vs message replies
A story comment and a story reply look similar on the screen, but they go to different places. A comment is public to the story’s audience. A reply goes to the owner’s DMs. A Meta spokesperson told Engadget that “comments live only on your Story”, so the owner does not receive them as messages.
| Story comment | Message reply | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | Everyone who can see the story | Only the story owner |
| Who can send it (default) | People the owner follows (public) or followers the owner follows back (private) | Anyone who can see the story |
| Where it appears | On the story, with your profile picture | In the owner’s DMs |
| Length | 60 characters, emojis included | No story-specific limit stated |
| How long it lasts | With the story, archive and highlights | In the DM thread |
| Owner can turn it off | Yes, for all stories or one story | Yes, in message reply settings |
Quick emoji reactions are a third option and work differently again. We explain those in can others see your Instagram story reaction. For comments on feed posts, see does Instagram notify when you mention someone in a comment.
Can you view story comments anonymously?
No. Story comments are only visible inside the Instagram app, to logged-in accounts in the story’s audience. We did not find an anonymous story viewer that shows them.
On 29 October 2026 we checked the code of our own viewer, ViewIGStory: it fetches story photos and videos and has no comment handling at all. The AnonyIG homepage (anonyig.com/en/) does not mention comments anywhere either. Third-party viewers load stories as a logged-out visitor, and a logged-out visitor is not a follower. Comment features are built around the follow relationship, so such a viewer has nothing to show.
So the search “instagram story viewer with comments” has an honest answer: an anonymous viewer can show you a public story, but the comments under it stay in the app. Any site that claims to show story comments from private accounts is making the same false claim as a “private profile viewer”, and deserves the same distrust.
Does commenting on a story reveal who you are?
Yes, on two levels. Your comment is public to the story’s whole audience, with your profile picture and username. And to comment, you must watch the story while logged in, so your account also appears in the story’s viewer list, the same way any logged-in view does (see does Instagram notify when you view a story).
There is no anonymous comment option. If you want to say something privately, send a message reply instead. If you only want to watch without being seen, don’t comment at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can everyone see my comment on an Instagram story?
Everyone who can see the story can see your comment. For a public account, that means anyone who opens the story in the Instagram app. For a private account, it means the owner’s approved followers. If the owner saves the story to a highlight, your comment stays visible to highlight viewers too, according to the Instagram Help Centre.
Do Instagram story comments disappear after 24 hours?
For other viewers, yes, when the story expires. But the story owner can still see comments in their story archive, and comments stay visible to everyone if the story is saved as a highlight. Early 2024 coverage said comments vanish after 24 hours; the 2026 Help Centre describes these two exceptions.
Why can’t I comment on someone’s Instagram story?
By default, you can comment only if the owner follows you (public account) or you follow each other (private account). The owner can also open comments to all followers or turn comments off, for all stories or one story. If the Comment button is missing, you are outside the allowed audience or comments are off.
Can an anonymous story viewer show comments?
We found none that does. Anonymous viewers load stories as a logged-out visitor, and story comments are tied to logged-in accounts in the story’s audience. On 29 October 2026, our own viewer had no comment feature and the AnonyIG homepage did not mention comments. A “story viewer with comments” for private accounts promises something no tool we checked could do.
Before you comment on someone’s story
Instagram story comments are public to the story’s audience, short (60 characters), and not as temporary as the 2024 headlines said: they follow the story into the archive and into highlights. Only accounts the owner allows can write them, and every comment carries the writer’s name. If you want privacy, use a message reply or stay silent. If you want to watch a public story without showing up in the viewer list, an anonymous viewer works for the story itself, but no viewer we checked can show you the comments.
